Ring sells a long list of outdoor cameras, and three of them cover most homes: the Outdoor Cam 4K Plus, the Outdoor Cam Pro and the Spotlight Cam Plus. All three are good cameras with a wide view, color night vision and a polished app.
The catch is the same on all of them. Without a paid Ring Protect plan, a Ring camera saves nothing, and there is no microSD slot or other local storage to fall back on.
Here is what each camera does, what you get for free, and who each one suits.
| Model | Video | Power | Light | Typical list price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Plus (Battery) | 4K | Battery, plug-in, wired or PoE+ | No spotlight | From about $150 |
| Ring Outdoor Cam Pro (Plug-In) | 4K | Plug-in, wired or PoE | No spotlight | From about $200 |
| Ring Spotlight Cam Plus (Plug-In) | 1080p HD | Plug-in, battery, wired or solar | Two LED spotlights | From about $150 |
What Works With No Subscription
Without a plan, you can open live view and get real-time notifications on your phone. The dashboard shows only the last image each camera captured.
Videos and photos are not saved, so you can’t check what happened at the gate an hour ago. Saved motion videos (up to 180 days), clip sharing and person and vehicle detection all need Ring Protect.
Plans have started at about $4.99 a month per camera, and Ring has renamed and repriced them over the years, so check Ring’s site before you commit. Most new Ring purchases include a free 30-day trial.

What to Check Before You Buy Ring
Power. Battery cameras are the easiest to mount, but you will recharge or swap the pack. A plug-in or wired camera never needs charging, and the plug-in models are the ones that connect on 5GHz Wi-Fi.
Your Wi-Fi. Ring recommends a minimum upload speed, and for the 4K Pro it is 15 Mbps.
Ring also keeps changing its names, so make sure the listing you click matches the model below.
The Best Ring Outdoor Security Cameras
Ring Outdoor Cam 4K Plus (Battery)
This is the best all-around Ring outdoor camera for most people. It records in 4K (3840 x 2160) with HDR and color night vision, and Ring lists a 140° horizontal and 85.7° vertical view.
Notebookcheck reports up to 10x enhanced zoom, radar-based 3D motion detection and a siren you can trigger from the app. Ring calls the battery option a first for its 4K cameras. The same camera also runs on a plug-in adapter, hardwired power or PoE+, and Ring rates it IP65 for -4°F to 122°F.
The catch is the subscription. Live view and alerts work on a free account, but nothing is saved without a plan, and Ring says 24/7 continuous recording needs wired power as well as a subscription. Ring doesn’t publish a battery runtime, and the camera is new, so there is little long-term owner feedback yet.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| 4K video with enhanced zoom Battery, plug-in, wired or PoE+ power Dual-band Wi-Fi, IP65 rating Cheaper than the Outdoor Cam Pro |
No recordings without a plan No local storage No battery life figure from Ring No spotlight |
Best for: Renters and first-time buyers who want 4K and the option to go wire-free.

Ring Outdoor Cam Pro (Plug-In)
The Outdoor Cam Pro is Ring’s step-up camera without lights. It records in 4K (3840 x 2160) with a 140° horizontal and 85° vertical view, and Ring lists 3D motion detection.
On paper, the 4K Plus lists the same resolution and 3D motion detection, so the main difference we can see is power. The Pro is plug-in, wired or PoE+ only, and it costs more.
It is a plug-in camera. It comes with a USB-C adapter and can also be hardwired or run on PoE+, and Ring rates it IP65 weather resistant. It works on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi.
24/7 recording, person and vehicle detection and video search all need a paid plan.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| 4K video with enhanced zoom 3D motion detection Dual-band Wi-Fi, IP65 rating Plug-in, wired or PoE+ power |
Highest price of the three Needs a strong upload speed Smart features and recording need a plan Needs a nearby outlet or PoE |
Best for: Spots with an outlet or PoE where you want a camera that never needs a battery.

Ring Spotlight Cam Plus (Plug-In)
The Spotlight Cam Plus adds two 3000K LED spotlights and a remote-activated siren. When the lights fire, you get color footage rather than grainy infrared, and the lights can also work as a deterrent.
It is 1080p HD, with a 140° horizontal and 80° vertical view. One reviewer called the 1080p picture a weakness next to Ring’s 2K camera, and noted it has no HomeKit support.
The plug-in version is the dual-band one, while the battery, wired and solar versions connect on 2.4GHz only. One reviewer found frequent light activations could drain the battery version in four to six weeks at a busy spot.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Spotlights and siren built in Color night video when lights fire Plug-in version has dual-band Wi-Fi Quick-release battery on other versions |
Only 1080p No recordings without a plan No HomeKit Needs tuning to cut false alerts |
Best for: Dark yards and side gates where a spotlight and siren matter more than resolution.
