The Tapo C120 is a plug-in security camera that costs about $40 and doesn’t ask for a subscription. It shoots 2K video, uses dual spotlights for color night vision, and carries an IP66 rating, so it works indoors or out.

It’s a budget camera, so there are trade-offs. Here’s what you get, what you don’t, and what to plan for before you buy.

Spec TP-Link Tapo C120
Resolution 2K QHD (2560×1440)
Field of view 120° diagonal, fixed lens
Night vision Color via dual spotlights, or IR up to 30 ft
Power Plug-in, USB-C, with a 9.8 ft cable
Weatherproofing IP66
Storage microSD up to 512GB (not included), optional Tapo Care cloud
Typical price Usually $30 to $40

What You Get

2K video is sharper than the 1080p you’ll find on most cameras at this price, so faces and details hold up better when you zoom in. The two spotlights switch on in low light to record in full color. If you’d rather not light up the yard, standard infrared mode reaches about 30 feet.

PCWorld liked the invisible IR mode, which turns off the red indicator light. That’s handy when you’re watching a nursery or a sleeping pet.

Two-way audio, a light-and-sound alarm, and a magnetic base are included. The magnet lets the camera snap onto any metal surface, and the box adds screws, anchors, a template, and adhesive.

Storage and Subscriptions

This is the main reason the C120 belongs on this site. Person, pet, and vehicle detection are free, and recording to a microSD card costs nothing. It can record continuously or on motion, and a card up to 512GB fits.

The card isn’t included, so budget a few dollars for one. Tapo Care, TP-Link’s cloud plan, is optional. It adds 30 days of cloud history and snapshot alerts, with a free first month.

Indoors or Outdoors: What to Plan For

The IP66 rating means the camera is protected from dust and powerful jets of water. PCWorld noted it doesn’t look rugged but is built for outdoor use. The rating covers the camera, so keep the plug-in power adapter somewhere sheltered.

It needs an outlet within about 10 feet, the length of the included cable. Outdoors, that usually means a covered porch or soffit near an outdoor outlet.

It connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only, so check that your router has a 2.4GHz band. And the 120-degree lens is fixed, so one camera covers a doorway or a patio, not a whole yard.

Pros Cons

TP-Link Tapo C120 Indoor/Outdoor Security Camera

For roughly the price of a pizza dinner, you get sharper video and more features than most cameras at this price. Add a microSD card and you have recording that never sends you a bill.

It won’t replace a pan-tilt camera or cover a large yard. For one doorway or one room, it’s one of the best values we’ve seen.
